In the mid- '90s, Billy Mackenzie was without the will to sing. Those troubled, epic tones of his took on an extra edge of desperation that's inevitably heartbreaking given his 1997 suicide. These albums belie any suspicion that Mackenzie was defunct following the demise of the Associates, yelping frantically but ineffectually in mourning for a lost pop dream. That said, Memory Palace, recorded between 1993 and 1995 with old friend and ex-Josef K man Paul Haig, is the least successful of these animals.

Haig's style, though eclectic, is a bit too spindly and methodical for Billy - take the measured trip hop thread of the opener, 'Thunderstorm'. Auchtermatic is more extravagant - Billy's last musical stand. In Steve Aungle he found a collaborator who, like Associate Alan Rankine, could provide the electric bluetones in which Mackenzie loved to revel. It also includes Mackenzie's last ever studio offering 'Pain In Any Language' recorded with Apollo 440, which smoulders with all the Mackenzie virtues of defiance, eccentricity and extravagance.

Transmission Impossible is mainly acoustic recordings from Mackenzie's personal collection. They're generally wonderful, with Billy enjoying the luxurious respite of privacy, not needing to cry out for attention. As well as intimate covers of 'Wild Is The Wind' and Sparks' 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth', there is '14 Mirrors', co-penned with Aungle, in whose complex, emotionally nuanced chord changes you lose yourself as if in an unfamiliar city."
